The 4th pin missing on a 3 pin connector is the PWM (pulse width modulation) control pin. Running 4 pin fan connectors works best and all fans are easily controlled this way. All the other headers can be regulated with 3 pin fans, but the CPU fan is a no go with 3 pins. Inconvenient yes, but the header is designed for a 4 pin CPU fan. I tried the fan header with a 3 pin and a 4 pin fan, and the 4 pin can be regulated, but not the 3 pin. Now I am wondering whether my trouble with OPT_FAN 1 is from a bad mobo or is there an upcoming bios that would fix this issue with the uncontrollable fan speed via OPT_FAN 1 header. If I plug the fan in OPT_FAN 2 or 3, fan runs fine and fan speed can be adjusted via bios. I originally thought it was the fan that was the cause of my problem but after trying different fans in OPT_FAN 1, it seems that the header itself is the cause of my troubles. I have tried to set its duty to 50% in bios. The OPT_FAN 1 seems to be running at 100% all the time. The CHA_FAN headers seem to be working fine. I have 4 of these 120mm fans connected via CHA_FAN 1, 2 and 3 and OPT_FAN 1. If not, plug the fans in to the mobo directly.Currently running Bios 1201 on Rampge IV Extreme I would make sure the case's fan controller board is plugged into your mobo via a fan cable if possible, if that was the issue, problem solved. should work, but you can always plug the fans directly into the motherboard and control them with those settings you posted pix of earlier. Usually those fan controllers do have a "input" fan cable that runs from the controller to one of the mobo fan plugs so the controller can sorta control the RPM based on a single PWM signal. So if they are plugged into the case's little fan controller, those motherboard BIOS pics won't tell us anything as the mobo is not communicating to the fans at all. I don't Think the CPU fan is a problem actually Maybe i should pull them out of that and plug the case fans into the motherboard instead so i can monitor them? I don't even Think the motherboard registers the case fans because my case has its own Little motherboard on the back where the fans and lgb etc are connected to.
